Pancake Day/Shrove Tuesday/Mardi Gras
In the Christian calendar, Shrove Tuesday is the last day before Lent, a season of repentance and abstinence. It was an occasion for confession (shriving) and for using up foods forbidden during Lent and therefore became associated in some countries with eating pancakes, and in others is called Mardi Gras (‘Fat Tuesday’) and is a carnival day.
