Anniversary of Rosa Parks’ Arrest
Rosa Parks, an African American, was arrested on the evening of 1 December 1955 for disobeying an Alabama law that required black passengers to give up their seats to white passengers when the bus was full. Black people also were required to sit at the back of buses. Her arrest prompted a 381-day boycott of the Montgomery bus system in Alabama, and ultimately led to the 1956 Supreme Court decision to ban segregation on public transport.
